Amazing volcanic activity seen from space

Photobucket

This May 23, 2006, photo released by NASA shows the eruption of Cleveland Volcano, Aleutian Islands, Alaska, as photographed by an Expedition 13 crew member on the International Space Station. The image captures the ash plume of the very short-lived eruption.

Amazing Timelapse of Earth

Science educator James Drake built this amazing timelapse video from the perspective of the International Space Station as it flew over North and South America.

He created this video by downloading a series of 600 photographs that were available online at the Gateway to Astronomy Photograph of Earth, and then stitching them together into a complete video.

Japanese Tsunami Viewed From A Car

Yu Muroga is a Japanese driver. It was his tour took place when the earthquake March 11, 2011. Like most people of his area, he did not feel threatened by the tsumani, as it was far enough from the coast. So he continued to drive and do its job. The HD camera mounted on the dashboard has not only captured the shock but also the moments that followed, where many drivers were stranded by the waters of the tsunami.

Sparking view from Japan's volcano !

Photobucket

TOKYO (AFP) - – A volcano in southwestern Japan shot ash and rocks up to 2,000 metres into the air with the blast shattering windows miles away in a huge explosion, officials said.

Authorities widened the danger zone around the 1,421-metre (4,689-feet) Shinmoedake volcano in the Kirishima range, which has been belching smoke and ash since Wednesday.

The latest blast came shortly before 8:00 am (2300 GMT Monday).

Flying shards from broken hospital windows left a 92-year-old woman with hand and facial injuries, a Kirishima city official told AFP, adding that nearly 200 windows were smashed at schools and public halls.

After the eruption, the Japan Meteorological Agency revised its warning, widening the area at risk from flying debris from three to four kilometres from the peak.

More than 600 residents of the town of Takaharu in Miyazaki prefecture have been forced to evacuate and take shelter in school halls and community centres.

The dome of lava inside the crater, which grows as pressure increases from below, has been expanding quickly amid concerns it could spill over the rim of the volcano and flow down the sides of the mountain.

It is the volcano's first major eruption in 52 years, billowing grey smoke into the sky, leading to train and flight cancellations, with television footage showing residents shovelling ash from streets.

A nearby observatory has raised its five-scale warning level on the volcano from two to three, restricting access to the entire mountain.

In April last year the eruption of the Eyjafjoell volcano in Iceland dispersed a vast cloud of ash triggering a huge shutdown of airspace that affected more than 100,000 flights and eight million passengers

Giant spaceships to attack Earth in 2012?

Photobucket
Photo: DailyMail

Fact or fiction: Will spaceships really attack Earth in 2012?

34 per cent of Americans believe that UFOs exist and they might be right after all.

Believe it or not, researchers at SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) — an independent non-commercial organisation in the United States — released a shocking statement last week that three giant spaceships are heading towards Earth, according to AsiaOne News.

The largest one of them is reported to be 240 kilometres wide, and the two others are smaller.

The spaceships were detected by the Alaska-based High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) search system, which is designed to study the phenomenon of northern lights. The system is also used by the US Air Force for missile detection.

Moreover, the report claims that the spaceships, which are currently beyond the orbit of Pluto, will reach Earth in December 2012.

But get this — that also coincides with the end of Mayan calendar, whose last day is December 21, 2012 (this was the subject of the recent movie, “2012″). These spaceships will only be visible in optical telescopes as soon as they reach Mars’s orbit and the US government has reportedly been informed about the event.

Why is this probably a hoax?

I was chatting on Facebook with my fellow classmate Ng Zhan Ming, an ASEAN scholar interested in astronomy, and he dismissed the spaceship reports as wild speculation.

He gave me valid reasons why this strange phenomenon will not occur.

Firstly, why would aliens wait until after we have developed nuclear weapons capable of mass destruction? They could have set their invasion schedule to early 20th century and met no resistance from the human race.

Secondly, many countries all over the world, especially United States’ NASA, have satellites in orbit. Why is it that only one system saw it?

And we have the Hubble Space Telescope that can zoom in roughly 40 times closer than a ground-based telescope to see the furthest of the galaxies. But apparently, it did not detect any spaceships while the HAARP system did.

In addition, the report claims that UFOs will attack Earth in December 2012, which coincides with the end of the Mayan calendar.

According to a FAQ article published by NASA in 2009, “Nothing bad will happen to the Earth in 2012. Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012.”

Should we believe NASA or SETI (an independent organisation) and the Mayans who created the ancient calendar 10,000 years ago?

As mentioned earlier, Barack Obama’s administration has been notified about the findings by the SETI researchers.

However, no official word from the White House or NASA has been released so far. This is not a military secret so there is no point hiding the fact if what the SETI scientists predicted was really true.

Mystery Missile Launch Seen off Calif. Coast
Military Mum on Nature of "Big Missile" Rising Out of Pacific - a Possible Show of U.S. Military Might

(CBS) A mysterious missile launch off the southern California coast was caught by CBS affiliate KCBS's cameras Monday night, and officials are staying tight-lipped over the nature of the projectile.

CBS station KFMB put in calls to the Navy and Air Force Monday night about the striking launch off the coast of Los Angeles, which was easily visible from the coast, but the military has said nothing about the launch.

KFMB showed video of the apparent missile to former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Robert Ellsworth, who is also a former Deputy Secretary of Defense, to get his thoughts.

Scroll down for KFMB video showing the launch.

"It's spectacular... It takes people's breath away," said Ellsworth, calling the projectile, "a big missile".

Magnificent images were captured by the KCBS news helicopter in L.A. around sunset Monday evening. The location of the missile was about 35 miles out to sea, west of L.A. and north of Catalina Island.

A Navy spokesperson told KFMB it wasn't their missile. He said there was no Navy activity reported in the area Monday evening.

On Friday night, Vandenberg Air Force Base, in California, launched a Delta II rocket, carrying an Italian satellite into orbit, but a sergeant at the base told KFMB there had been no launches since then.

Ellsworth urged American to wait for definitive answers to come from the military.

When asked, however, what he thought it might be, the former ambassador said it could possibly have been a missile test timed as a demonstration of American military might as President Obama tours Asia.

"It could be a test-firing of an intercontinental ballistic missile from a submarine ... to demonstrate, mainly to Asia, that we can do that," speculated Ellsworth.
