Interview with the champions

Spotlight: AK Grand Champion (Adult)

In our final spotlight on the Animal Kaiser Fiesta winners, we take a look at William Khong, the first-ever AK adult Grand Champion. The 30-year-old avid card game collector is a picture of calm and control, deftly demolishing all challengers to his throne. He tells IAHGames.com a little more about himself, very matter-of-factly.

"Before AK, I have collected and played a few popular card games: San Guo (3 Kingdoms), Magic: The Gathering and Dinosaur King. What I love best about AK is the card design.

To me, AK is another card game – with a much more sophisticated battle system that takes place on a game machine instead of a traditional table top. I love the feeling of pressing the right buttons to secure my victories.

Many AK players hit the buttons vigorously during an attack, believing that it makes a difference. Actually it doesn’t. Just hit once when you need to determine your attack power, and that number is final.

Oh, and having a bigger playing budget is very helpful.

I started playing AK at the beginning of last year. I’ve got all the Version 1 cards but I’m still short of most Version 2 cards. In addition, I only use English cards, unlike many hardcore players who bother to collect the Japanese version cards.

Just one week after I started out on AK, I was already taking part in my first AK tournament (the weekly ones held by Zone-X). So I’m no stranger to competitive AK duels by now.

Well, I’m happy that a lot more people will know me now!"

Today we introduce our first-ever Animal Kaiser Grand Champion! Xenith Wong, the 9-year-old winner of the children category, is no stranger to victory and publicity. Accompanied by her big brother who strutted around like her personal bodyguard, we managed to get some time with her.

Xenith wasn’t shy about attention she was getting; in fact she might be overly friendly at times. She shared her sweets with this editor, asked to check the interview notes, and showed how she could touch her nose with her tongue.

"This is my fifth time winning an AK tournament. I don’t even think there is a secret to winning. But it really helps to take part in such contests often. Zone-X (the arcade chain) holds weekly tournaments and I got lots of practice from these.

I started off with AK around last year, and this isn’t just a personal pursuit. Both my parents are also keen AK players. In fact, they are taking part in the adult category of the Grand Championships today!

What’s likeable about AK? The animals, the graphics, and the playing experience. I love everything about it; it’s fun in every single way!

Besides AK, I also enjoy drawing. Pandas are my specialty, but I do not use the panda animal in AK. It’s not powerful enough.

Despite this being my fifth victory, I was mostly nervous on stage, in front of such a big crowd. I have never taken part in anything this big! But once the games began, you could say I got ‘into the zone’ and focused on the duel.

Victory is sweet! I almost cried when I won…"

Spotlight : Winner, AK 7-Eleven Finals (Adult)

At first glance, Mohd Herwin Hakim B Hamdam, 13, belongs to the children’s category. But age left him only the adult category to compete in. And compete he did, beating the brood of far older rivals.

The shy and giggly Mohd Herwin was also the youngest participant in the Adult Category. IAHGames.com sat him down (in fact, his very supportive and jolly family was with us) for a little chat…

"I started playing AK only recently, during December 2009. But once you understand the game, it doesn’t take much practice to become good at it! So here I am…

The animal attacks and special effects are very attractive, and the game itself is fun to play. The graphics are very nice too, and not just the images on the game machine. The pictures on the cards are also beautiful, and everyone wants to collect them.

There are almost 1,000 cards in my collection now, which includes Version 1, 2 and some Japanese cards (all top players seem to say the same thing).

I usually spent S$6.00 playing AK, almost every day. My gaming time can range from half an hour to 3 hours, depending on what card I get from the game machine after a duel.

Winning AK duels carries a big element of luck, but you can train for an extra advantage. Learn to press the buttons at the right time! And then, practise!

I was definitely scared at the start of the competition, especially when I saw all my opponents. They were much older, taller, and looked like professional players.

But now, I don’t need to be scared of anyone…"

Spotlight : Winner, AK 7-Eleven Finals (Child)

The winner of the Animal Kaiser 7-Eleven Finals is a boy of few words and big impact. Richie Lim, 10, marched into the tournament with a slightly reluctant mother in tow, and walked home with top honours. The resident of Woodlands, Singapore, shared his thoughts with stoic replies…

"I started playing Animal Kaiser about one year ago, in July 2009 (I think). Since then I have collected all the AK cards from Version 1, Version 2, and even some Japanese cards.

Of course, I can’t wait to collect Version 3.

This may be surprising, but I don’t play that often – usually only on weekends. How did I win? Winning is mostly due to luck, at least for me.

AK is a very fun game. All my friends and I love the colourful animals, and collecting all the cards. The 7-Eleven outlet near my house is always crowded with players, all day!

It was the first time I have taken part is such a big AK tournament, and so I was very nervous on the day of the finals. I did not even eat for the whole day!

When I won, I felt so relieved and happy. Now I can have a good rest."

~ Richie Lim, 10 years old
