NSP at Tampines GRC rally, May 4
Singapore permanent residents (PRs) should own their HDB flats for a minimum of eight years before they are allowed to sell them, said National Solidarity Party's (NSP) Goh Meng Seng during a rally at Tampines stadium on Wednesday evening.
According to Goh, the leader of NSP's Tampines GRC team, the rationale behind such a policy suggestion is to prevent them from speculating in property and pushing up property prices.
He said, "Only those PRs who would be interested to settle down in Singapore would not be deterred by such rules because they are in it for the long haul."
In his speech he also mentioned that Singapore must attract the "right foreigners" who can contribute to Singapore's growth, and "not just those who want to go America or Australia after taking us for a ride."
"We welcome foreigners to make this place their home, but not just to speculate property, take our jobs, make money and run away," Goh said.
He also touched on how foreigners are allowed to rent HDB flats while the homeless need to wait for rental flats for 36 months for a subsidized flat.
In addition, HDB is not allowed to rent flats directly to foreigners. But according to Goh, it circumvents the rules by letting EM services, HDB's panel of valuation consultants, rent their flats out to foreigners working in Singapore.
The NSP secretary-general said that HDB can earn much more by charging foreigners a higher price than renting their flats out at a heavily subsidised rate to Singaporeans.
"My good country is turning into a soulless, heartless, greedy company and I do not want my country to be a slave factory," he said.
While referring to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's apology to Singaporeans, Goh said that it has come "too little too late".
"We do not want sorry; we want them to regret for not taking our interests into consideration for the past five years," he told the estimated 5,000-strong crowd.
The issue of public housing was a hot topic during the rally because Goh's Tampines GRC team, comprising Syafarin Sarif, Fong Chin Leong, Raymond Lim and Gilbert Goh, will go head-to-head against National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan, who has been criticised by some for allowing HDB flats to become unaffordable.

SPP at Potong Pasir SMC rally, May 4
I’ll still be here after 7 May: SPP’s Chiam See Tong
Singapore People's Party chief Chiam See Tong has promised Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC residents that he will still be around after Polling Day.
Speaking at the last rally on his 'home turf' at Potong Pasir, the party's secretary-general reiterated his message of previous speeches made over the past week, urging voters in Bishan-Toa Payoh and Potong Pasir to "be brave", "be courageous" and choose the opposition.
"The residents in Potong Pasir have voted for me, and I and all the residents have not been victimised. We are still around," he said.
"There is nothing for you to fear," he added, drawing huge applause from the estimated 4,000-strong crowd.
Chiam also referred to this Saturday's Polling Day as "D-day", explaining that it could stand for two possible words starting with the letter 'D'.
"If you vote for the opposition, you will be voting on 'democracy' day. But if you vote for the PAP (People's Action Party), it will be 'darkness' day," he said, to laughs and cheers from the crowd.
However, he cautioned that if voters chose the PAP, "Singapore will remain dark in a cloud of fear".
As witnessed in previous SPP rallies, support for Chiam continued to be emotional, enthusiastic and energetic, with residents shouting words of encouragement to him, such as "Chiam See Tong, be strong!" whenever he paused during his speech for extended periods.
Chiam concluded his rally speech with an appeal to the Bishan-Toa Payoh electorate to "show (their) support" for the SPP candidates come 7 May.
Echoing the shouts of a persistent supporter, he said: "Yes, don't worry, I will still be around after 7 May."
Chiam See Tong :
Meanwhile, Chiam's teammate Benjamin Pwee acknowledged but questioned the cost behind the apology made by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on behalf of the incumbent PAP government.
"For every wrong decision, for every not-so-perfect policy, for everything that they have said sorry for -- what was the cost in taxpayers' money that was lost because of that?" he asked in his speech.
Pwee also responded to PAP candidate and former classmate Josephine Teo, who asked if the SPP team standing in Bishan-Toa Payoh knew what its residents wanted, after she asked them on television if they were aware that its residents wanted 'stone ducks' to be placed around their estates.
In response, he cited an instance where a resident in the embattled GRC had written directly to the SPP, complaining about a situation of stray cats beneath her block and in her estate. He shared that he forwarded the request to their party volunteer who informed the cat lovers' society about the situation, and the society took care of the matter within a day, without harming any of the cats.
He said: "I would like to ask respectfully, Josephine, do you know about cats in Bishan-Toa Payoh?"
Turning his attention back to PM Lee's apology, Pwee said that there are many other things that needed to be apologised for at all levels of leadership, based on the stories he and his teammates had heard through the years.
"Do we want to wait every five years for a 'sorry' to be said? Do we want to wait every five years for the government to admit that the people are unhappy and that the policy needs improving?" he asked, to resounding "No!" from the crowd after each question.
He then urged the electorate to vote the opposition into Parliament, "so (the SPP) can keep them accountable at every parliamentary sitting, every month and every year for the next five years."

GE 2011: After Chiam See Tong's last rally speech in Potong Pasir
Worker Party @ Aljunied GRC rally, May 4
Workers’ Party unveils plans for Aljunied GRC
The Workers' Party (WP) team will seek to increase the number of private childcare centres in suitable HDB void decks in Aljunied GRC and review the condition of playgrounds and upgrade those that need it.
The party will also dialogue with residents on where estate connectors should be built, encourage more bottom-up initiatives and study the possibility of using renewable energy sources so that savings can be used in other ways.
WP secretary-general Low Thia Khiang focused the bulk of his English speech outlining these proposals and more at the party's Ubi Avenue 1 rally on Wednesday night, in what the appears to be the first time the party has publicly detailed its plans for the estate.
It is a move that Foreign minister George Yeo, who heads the People's Action Party's Aljunied GRC team, has been asking of the WP.
Low assured voters, just as the party has worked with voluntary welfare organisations to help the needy and elderly and kept an education trust fund for needy students in Hougang SMC, it will do so in Aljunied GRC as well.
When it comes to managing the town council finances, the party will "balance the books" and focus on "value for money" programmes, he added.
Low also listed five questions he would raise in Parliament for Singaporeans.
For instance, what concrete plans does the government have for students who have to take bank loans for their tertiary education and what are its plans for people who need medical treatment but have difficulty paying the out-of-pocket expenses.
Referring to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's apology on Tuesday, Low said, "Do you think without strong opposition to challenge them in this election, you will get an apology?"
"If we don't have effective opposition in Parliament do you think they will continue to listen to you for the next five years?"
Other opposition candidates also touched on PM Lee's apology.
WP chairman and candidate for Aljunied GRC Sylvia Lim also focused her message on the Aljunied GRC voters.
"I would like to assure you, the Workers' Party already knows something about you, the Aljunied residents," she said, sharing how the party has reached out to residents over the last nine years.
Local concerns include a shortage of season carpark spaces in Serangoon North and Punggol and harassment from loan sharks in Paya Lebar and Punggol, while other concerns include the rising cost of living and accessing Central Provident Funds, she cited.
WP Aljunied GRC candidates responded to the Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong's comments that voting in the WP team could mean losing Foreign Minister George Yeo and potential Speaker of Parliament Zainul Abidin Rasheed.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said last month, he would appoint Zainul, a three-term Member of Parliament, as Speaker if he was re-elected.
But on Wednesday night, WP candidates Chen Show Mao and Muhamad Faisal Manap referred to Article 40 of the Constitution to show that the Speaker need not be elected from among MPs.
This means, the Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs could still be a Speaker even if he is not re-elected. In fact, the first Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Sir George Oehlers, had not been elected, said Chen.
He said: "Vote the WP, so Mr Zainul can serve as Speaker and the WP can serve Aljunied residents as their MPs. This is a win-win proposition."
A total of 11 candidates spoke on Wednesday night. They continued to draw a strong crowd in spite of the soggy conditions at the open field near Ubi Avenue 1, due to an earlier downpour

A message from Mr Chiam See Tong 's supporter
Dear Voters of Bishan-TP GRC,
Standing before u is a man who has devoted more than 20 yrs of his life in politics.
He has won 7 elections. He has always been taunted at by PAP in Parliament whenever he spoke out strongly against their unreasonable policies.
Look at him now. Despite being hit by stroke, he has stood up strongly and walk out of PP over to Bishan-TP GRC to lead his team to break PAP's GRC stranglehold.
Let's not lose out to our neighbours- Aljunied GRC.
We should VOTE for Mr CHIAM ST and his team into Parliament so that more of our voices can be heard and for PAP to wake up and treat all Opposition Wards with Respect !!!!
Looks like Chiam's unexplained yet legendary magnetic pull might pull Bishan-TP from PAP's orbit.
I had doubts about him taking on two ultra-strong ministers in a GRC that has not been contested for 20 years and the fact that he is frail and not in good health. That did not seem to be case at his rally speech. As others have mentioned in this forum and others - Chiam ability to connect with aunties, uncles, the young ones, the various races as well as those who cut across the educational spectrum is again surfacing.
In 1991, no one expected Chiam to pull 3 seats out of PAP's orbit. It was blamed on a Minister of State that washes her hands but Chiam did not receive much credit.
In 1991, he did it with 2 chaps, one of whom turned out to be a clown. This time around he has Ben Pwee who has solid credentials. It also appears that Ben has picked up grassroots cultivation skills from his dad, courtesy of PAP.
Lets put it this way - anything less than 55% by the PAP is slap in the face for WKS and if it turns out to be a loss, guess who will be on suicide watch.
You re-sat for your o level English to obtain a credit and you did. You then went to Teachers Training College and became a teacher. Posted to Kuantan, you were admired for your diligence and passion. Your students from both sides of the causeway remember you. You saved up and went to NZ to obtain your tertiary education. You did not stop and persevered and became a lawyer and an officer of the Supreme Court. Nearly 30 years ago, a little VW putted away in Cainhill with your Mrs in tow. You distributed flyers and you spoke to residents. You again persevered. After repeated attempts the residents of Potong Pasir saw a man that could deliver and you did.
In parliament, you made the Minister of National Development sweat at every session. You made old man apologise that no other opposition member has ever done. You also sued 2 cabinet minister successfully which again no other person has managed. In 1991, you delivered 3 seats which again has yet to be repeated. In all these years, no harsh word for anyone. In parliament you chastised a PAP member for using racist and bigoted comment against the Indian community. The irony was not lost as none of the PAP Indian members stood up to defend their own community. This led to unrest and the PM of the day, Goh Chok Tong had to explain to parliament that the senior most PAP Indian member and cabinet Minister Jayakumar wanted to rise to object but Chiam beat him to it. Talk about overpaid heavy ----.
The young may not remember you but the parents do. May the force be with you Singaporeans are. You served this country well and the country still needs you.
May the force be with you Mr Chiam as the rest of Singapore seem to be.
